# How to focus while studying when your phone is also a study tool. Canonical: https://modernfocus.app/blog/focus-while-studying/ By: Modern Focus editorial team Published: 2026-09-07 Updated: 2026-09-07 Define one study task, leave the apps you need available, and restrict the feeds you tend to escape into. Pair that selection with your phone’s notification controls and a break that has an ending. Modern Focus supplies usage limits, not a study scheduler or a treatment for attention difficulties. Your phone may hold your timetable, authentication app, dictionary, or a message from a study partner. Putting every app behind a wall can interrupt learning as surely as leaving every feed open. Start with a more precise separation: tools for this task and places you go when the task feels difficult. ## Write a finish line you can recognize “Study chemistry” is large and vague. “Attempt five questions, then mark what I did not understand” gives the session a shape. Keep the next action visible on paper or at the top of your document. Make starting small enough that you do not need to feel ready. Open the material before setting up a complicated productivity system. The blocker should support studying, not become another way to postpone it. ## Keep the useful tools available In Modern Focus, select the distracting apps and website domains you want to limit. Leave necessary tools outside that selection. If the distraction is a particular website, domain blocking may be more appropriate than restricting an entire browser. Website detection currently recognizes Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Samsung Internet on Android and depends on readable address-bar information. Test your actual study workflow. Modern Focus cannot separate useful and distracting sections within every app; a lecture and a Shorts feed inside YouTube are not separate app targets. ## Handle the invitation to check A laboratory study found that phone notifications could disrupt an attention task even without direct phone interaction. That is a reason to consider cues, alongside app access. It is not a precise prediction of your exam performance. Use your phone's notification settings to quiet unnecessary alerts while preserving essential contacts. Modern Focus's blocker is not a replacement for those notification controls. Its own notification permission supports a remaining-time countdown. ## Give the break an ending Choose what you will do during a break before reaching for the phone: get water, move around, look outside, or send a specific reply. If you choose a feed, its use can still count toward your shared rolling allowance and continuous-session limit. A rolling allowance is not a Pomodoro timer. It looks backward over recent use; it does not automatically arrange study and break sessions. Use a separate clock or your own routine if you want scheduled intervals. ## Judge the work, not only the timer At the end, record what you understood and what needs another attempt. Check whether the restrictions helped you stay with the material. If they interfered with a necessary tool, adjust your selection during the configuration window. The useful outcome is a repeatable way to start and finish a small piece of learning. A low screen-time total is secondary to that. Sources: Stothart et al.
